Es interesante esta reflexión sobre los distintos significados que tiene la palabra inglesa education, y la palabra educación en las culturas latinas e indígenas. Hablando acerca de las metas de la educación escolar, Greenfield, Keller, Fuligni y Maynard (2003) dicen:
These goals are crystallized in a different concept of education, educación (Reese et al. 1995). This Spanish word is not an accurate translation of the English word education. Unlike “education,” educación refers to the inculcation of proper and respectful social behavior; like the Tzotzil na, educación refers to character. The connotation is that academic learning does not suffice to make a person educated.
