Acababa de terminar studio y me despedía de mi grupo de trabajo cuando escuché un estruendoso “GOOOL” que sonó por toda la parte superior de los desks en el GSD. Rápidamente lo atribuí a que si Perú estaba jugando, seguro que también otras selecciones y el numeroso grupo de mexicanos se habría juntado seguramente en un desk a mirar el partido. No podía ser Perú. Me desmintió inmediatamente el celular con las decenas de whatsapp en todos los grupos en los que estoy exclamando GOL, GOL, GOL. Los del grupo de Harvard Perú deseando estar en Lima y los del grupo de becarios deseando haber escogido una maestría en Moscú. Entonces dije por qué no y subí las escaleras a buscar de dónde habían venido los gritos. Era de los desks del quinto piso. Ahí en el espacio de Gustavo y prácticamente aplastando a su compañero oriental estaban 3 peruanos, 2 ecuatorianos y 1 colombiano mirando atentamente por internet la realidad paralela de que Perú le estuviera ganando en Ecuador a Ecuador por 2 a 0. Ha pasado un día entero y seguimos en esa realidad paralela. Y lo más increíble de todo es que el gato encerrado le acertó al resultado en la polla de su trabajo. Algo más?
I went to buy some Harvard clothes to the Coop store in Harvard Square. I felt like this only a few times in my life. Only a few times in my life I went to a store of a brand as powerful as Harvard brand. I would only compare it to the time I went to Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo in Ikebukuro or to the stores of Disney in Orlando. Evidently, Harvard brand is one of the things that stand out from this university. I am sure that the level of the Professors, of its infrastructure and its students, although outstanding, are not very different than universities like Stanford, Chicago or Columbia. However, the fact that the word “Harvard” is worldwide associated with wisdom and excellence even outside of the academic or professional world is something that almost none of the other universities have. There in the store of Harvard Coop, where this brand is sold (with a 25% discount for Harvard students) there was a book called “50 Succesful Harvard Application Essays”. It was under the section label that prayed “Be Smarter”. I would have bought it if I had been here before. I am not sure if such a book would even be published in most of the top universities around the globe.
A nice feature of the Harvard Coop store was that most of the sections have some labels indicating the name and date of foundation of all the schools of Harvard and of some other important institutions of the university like the different houses of college. The frightening part was that on top of the shield of the Harvard School of Design were the words “Stay Up All Night”.

Antes de venir, me pensé mucho dónde debería vivir. Si buscar rentar un departamento con amigos o si quedarme con el dorm que ofrecía el Harvard Graduate School of Sciences and Arts. Finalmente, me decidí por lo segundo. Aunque me parecía que perdería en comodidad, sabía que me ahorraría un montón de tiempo al no tener que comprar muebles e instalar todo en la nueva vivienda. Por eso, llegué con una expectativa muy baja sobre cómo serían los dormitorios del GSAS. Imaginaba algo similar a los dormitorios en los que viví durante un año en Alemania.
Pero por eso también día tras día he quedado más y más sorprendido de lo buena que fue la decisión de venir por acá. Resultó un cuarto más grande del que me imaginaba, con una buena vista y muy cerca a donde tengo las clases. Quizás tenga tiempo luego para describirlo mejor, porque quizás lo más interesante de contar sería los temas de investigación de los varios PHD que viven en el mismo piso y con los que converso todos los días. Hoy por primera vez bajé a los espacios comunes del sótano y jugamos una partida de bola 8 con Moritz, Ina y Eduardo. Una partida de bola 8 con reglas suizas.
Ni bien terminó la clase de métodos cuantitativos salí disparado hacia el salón 111, escuché por ahí que le dicen “the war room” o algo parecido. Lo hice porque había hablado con al menos tres personas que sin estar en el Master in Urban Planning pensaban tomar la clase de Historia y Teoría de las Intervenciones Urbanas. En efecto, al llegar la sala estaba ya llena de gente. Antes de llegar había ya pensado cuáles serían mi primera y segunda opción para sentarme. Alcancé a estar en la segunda, un asiento que, aunque estaba hacia uno de los lados, estaba en primera fila. Son las consecuencias de la miopía y supongo que también del cariño por mis viejos lentes. A mi lado, Ina, una compañera de China, alcanzó también un sitio y fue probablemente la última en encontrar uno. Luego de ella todo el mundo tuvo que improvisar sentándose en el piso, en sillas de otro salón o simplemente parándose en el fondo. Gente del MUP, del MDes, del MUD, del MLA, de otras escuelas de Harvard, del College, del MIT, imagino que alrededor de unas 80 o 90 personas. Es cierto, son los shopping days, pero no solo es eso. Era Neil Brenner a punto de dar su manifesto.
