“Prohibido pescar en el río”, reza un aviso colocado a la entrada del distrito de Huachocolpa, provincia de Huancavelica. Desde el pasado sábado 26, cuando se produjo el desborde de los relaves de la minera Caudalosa Chica hacia los ríos de la zona, este cartel suena a ironía. El río Totora Pampa, también conocido como Huachocolpa, ya no tiene truchas. Sus afluentes más próximos, Escalera y Opamayo, tampoco. Los desechos tóxicos se han extendido a lo largo del cauce de esos tres ríos, que en total suman 70 kilómetros.
Ayer, en vez de aguas claras, en las que abundaban truchas, que eran el sustento de gran parte de la población local, solo se observaba residuos de color rojizo y plomo a lo largo de los pueblos de los distritos de Huachocolpa (provincia de Huancavelica) y Lircay (Tayacaja). Lo más grave es que Huachocolpa, Escalera y Opamayo van a parar al río Urubamba y al Mantaro. Este último llega al río Amazonas por el Ucayali.
En el asiento minero Caudalosa, el origen del desembalse de los relaves, el escenario es aun más dantesco. El depósito de los relaves es ahora un boquerón, una especie de cráter de 200 metros cuadrados de extensión, por el que salieron todos los desechos tóxicos que en primer lugar alcanzaron el cauce del río Escalera. En este afluente se puede observar que los desechos mineros, una suerte de barro color plomo, alcanzaron hasta los 10 metros de altura.
UN PÉSIMO PRONÓSTICO
En medio de ese paisaje, unos 700 obreros de la minera trabajaban ayer en la limpieza del barro y en reforzar el depósito para evitar nuevos deslizamientos. Para ello, aguas abajo del río Escalera, se empezó la construcción de tres diques que intentarán contener el avance de los desechos.
“Todo ser vivo que haya podido existir en dichos ríos ha tenido que ser destruido por los desechos de minerales que se precipitaron a sus cauces porque estos son altamente tóxicos y contienen toda clase de reactivos químicos (ácidos) que se utilizan en el tratamiento de los concentrados de minerales”, refirió ayer el ingeniero Juan Ospina Núñez, especialista en cuencas hidrográficas y miembro de la Mesa de Diálogo de la Descontaminación del Río Mantaro.
Estimó que los relaves mineros continuarán matando toda la biodiversidad que exista aguas abajo. “La contaminación es total hasta la desembocadura del río Opamayo en el Urubamba”, sostuvo el especialista.
Sin embargo, el ingeniero Salvador Robles, superintendente de la mina Caudalosa, señaló que los desechos derramados no significan ningún peligro para la naturaleza porque no contienen elementos tóxicos ya que en sus operaciones no usan ácidos, como el cianuro.
“El relave es una separación de minerales, como el plomo, zinc, cobre y plata. Lo desechable es el desmonte que en este caso es barro fino y libre de químicos”, dijo Robles.
El gerente de Defensa Civil de la región Huancavelica, Rafael Rojas, manifestó ayer su malestar porque la minera Caudalosa Chica no está cumpliendo con llevar agua y forraje para el ganado de las zonas afectadas por el vertimiento de los relaves.

Hoy se reunirán en Lircay los pobladores de las comunidades afectadas por el desborde del relave para adoptar las medidas de protesta contra la mina Caudalosa Chica.
La mina Caudalosa fue creada en 1942 por pequeños mineros agrupados por el Banco Minero. Recién en 1989 Caudalosa Chica, con capitales peruanos de propiedad del grupo Raffo, asumió el control de dicho asiento minero.
Las autoridades del Gobierno Regional de Huancavelica, del Ministerio Público y de los ministerios del Ambiente y de Energía y Minas se reunirán hoy en la zona de este nuevo desastre ecológico para determinar la mejor manera de remediarlo.
