| Ok So you know that I arrived there, first thing I must tell you that my trip was not an easy one, thanks to my sister I daresay. The money I spent was by far too much. Ok let’s see first thing was that when I was making my mind to go there my international student advisor Kirsten told me to look for a house or appartment or dorm to live. My sister talked with one of her friends that went there some years ago, and he told her that finding housing was easy for him, he even got cheaper rent because he rented an apartment on the outskirts of town (he didn’t mention her that he bought a car to do that) and he spent his first week looking for home and on that time he was sleeping in a hotel. Therefore I was meant to do the same thing. That my friends was my first mistake. My readers if you don’t know you spend a lot of time looking for a place to rent, and for an student that can be difficult, that was even worst with the budget I had (poor Peruvian exchange student) nevertheless my first weeks (2 or 3) were spent in a hostel. And that was the first time I was i a hostel in my life, it is pretty scary but the Austin one is pretty nice; and it has free wireless. and two pc’s for the not so lucky. There I met people from different locations as well as some later friends (I met Clay and Rox there, also Boyi and Rishcash.) Anyway I was there and I was looking for a place my friends were waiting for the dorms to start accepting people in. for Clay and me the hunt for home was kind of had, for us was difficult to get a hold to any place because we didn’t have a phone where to be located, also we didn’t know the price range, so at first we thought the deals were bad, then we had to go back to find the places taken already. Clay moved with some Australians and I ended up in riverside (he payed 200 dollars more for rent) the range was on riverside (from 300 shared apartment 4bedrooms/2 bathrooms all already gone when I arrived there; to 700 for one bd/br ) and riverside was 30 minutes away from the university by bus (one hour and something on rush hour) and like 4 hours walk to get there going through not a very nice part of town. the rent nearby the university is sort of the same +200 dollars if you don’t consider efficiencies that are like small hotel rooms that cost the same as riverside but without the kitchen. (If I had know then) it took me so long to get that because to get the place I had to get a cellphone first and also most of the places on riverside do pre-leasing of one year that means that I have to rent rent them for one year. and I have to rent them with some months in advance. that was another thing that I didn’t know, because I am a foreigner: I also don’t know how to use personal checks and how to balance the check book, and I don’t know how to use money orders, also I don’t know how rebates work, and so on. (oh yeah and the time shift from summer to winter) anyway. Life was complicated then, on those first days I spent a lot of my time with Clay looking for a place to stay, also I spent my money on stuff I didn’t need. needless to say that I got a place with some problems, that was the time I ended up with two Afro-American people that like to party far too much for me, one of them was on a party the whole time and the apartment was terrible because of him, he eventually got evicted, and after that me and my roommate had some time to sit back and relax. it was by the end of the semester that he got evicted. Anyway that is all I will say about the first place I was living. | Ok ustedes saben que llegué a texas, lo primero que debo decirles es que mi viaje no fue sencillo, gracias a mi hermanda debo apuntar. El dinero que gasté fue mucho mayor al pensado. Ok veamos lo primero fue que cuando aun estaba decidiendo sobre si ir o no mi asesor internacional, Kirsten me dijo que busque una casa o apartamento o dormitorio para vivir. Mi hermanita habló con amigos suyos que fueron a la universidad hace algunos años, su amigo le comento que encontrar casa fue sencillo para el, y que incluso él llego a alquilar un departamento barato en el limite de la ciudad (se le olvidó mencionar que también compró un carro para que eso pudiera ser posible) y le dijo que pasó la primera semana buscando una casa y que en el tiempo estaba durmiendo en un hotel. Así que se decidió en mi caso que hiciera lo mismo. Debo considerar aquello como el primer error. Mis estimados lectores. Si Ustedes no saben, normalmente uno pasa mucho tiempo buscando un lugar para vivir, y para un estudiante eso puede ser dificil, e incluso es peor si consideras el poco presupuesto que tenia.(Pobre estudiante peruano) Sin embargo mis primeras semanas 2 o 3 pasaron en un hostel. Y esa fue la primera vez que estube en un hostel en mi vida, da un poco de miedo pero el de Austin es bastante agradable, y tiene wireless gratis. Y dos computadoras para los que no son afortunados de tener laptop. Ahí conocí gente muy diferente de diferentes partes que luego serian amigos mios (conocí a Clay y a Rox ahí y tambien a Boyi y a Rishcash) Como fuere, estube buscando por un lugar para vviir, mientras mis amigos esperaban a que los dormitorios abrieran. Para Clay y para mi la busqueda de casa fue dificil, al principio nuestro primer problema fue que no podiamos contactar ningun lugar pues no teniamos telefonos donde nos puedan llamar, tampoco sabiamos cuanto podriamos gastar en la renta, asi que al principio los precios nos parecieron malos, y cuando regresamos los lugares ya estaban tomados. Clay se mudó con los australianos y yo terminé en Riverside (el pagaba 200 dolares mas que yo) el rango de precios en riverside en mi tiempo era (desde 300 en un apartamento compartido de 4 habitaciones y 2 baños que ya estaban tomados 300 era el precio por habitacion. cuando yo llegué hasta 700 por uno de una habitacion y baño) y Riverside estaba a 30 minutos de la universidad por bus (una hora y algo en rush hour) y como 4 horas de caminata por las partes mas tranquilas de la ciudad. La renta cerca de la universidad es casi la misma solo que pagas unos 200 dolares mas si no consideras los efficiency que son como pequeñas habitaciones de hotel. (ojala hubiera sabido de esas al principio) Me tomó tanto tiempo porque para tener un lugar necesitaba un celular y la mayor parte de lugares en riverside hace pre-contratos por un año. lo que significa que debia rentarlos por un año y con tiempo de anticipación. Otro problema que pasó fue que no se usar cheques personales, y no se como hacer balances de chekes y esas cosas y tampoco se como hacer ordenes de dinero (money orders) tampoco sabes como funcionan los rebates y asi. (ah no olvides cambiar la hora en verano e invierno) como fuere. La vida era complicada en ese entonces, en esos dias pasaba mucho tiempo buscando con Clay lugares para vivir, tambien gasté mi dinero en cosa que no necesitaba. No quiero mencionar que consegui un lugar pero con problemas. Mis roommates eran dos afroamericanos que gustaban tener fiestas, un poco demasiado para mi gusto, uno estaba de farra todo el tiempo y el departamento se veia terrible por culpa suya, a el lo botaron por no pagar la renta, y despues de eso yo y mi otro roomate tubimos tiempo para sentarnos y relajarnos. Fue casi al final del semestre que lo botaron. Como fuera eso es todo lo que tengo que decir del primer lugar en el que viví. |
