11/03/24: BLOG WEEK 2

Archaeology is the scientific study of the material remains of past human life and activities. These include human artifacts from the very earliest stone tools to the man-made objects that are buried or thrown away in the present day: everything made by human beings—from simple tools to complex machines, from the earliest houses and temples and tombs to palaces, cathedrals, and pyramids. Archaeological investigations are a principal source of knowledge of prehistoric, ancient, and extinct cultures.

1- Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?

Understanding the past through archaeology is challenging due to incomplete records, the need for interpretation, and the complexity of archaeological sites.

2- Would you enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig? Why, or why not?

Personally, I would enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig because of the opportunity to uncover artifacts and contribute to historical knowledge, despite recognizing the physical demands and uncertainties involved.

3- Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, and your way of life?

If archaeologists discovered my home in the future, they could infer details about my daily life, occupation, social status, interests, and relationships based on the artifacts and layout of the house.

1.-Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?
Yes, is very challenging. Because the objects tell a history about things you like or things that you do not like, ways that these people lived their life and the history of the past lies in the objects, since the people themselves can not be interrogated. and so the whole range of human experience, archaeology can tell that history.
2.- Would you enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig? Why, or why not?
Yes, because in a sense the archaeologist is reading the site as if you are reading your favorite book backwards in starting at the end of the history and then trying to work your way towards the beginning of the history by disassembling and documenting the layers of human activity and lack of activity that have occurred at the place over time.
A archeology site is rich and dense with information. When we go in and we pull out the most beautiful the most precious objects, and cast aside what seems like the detritus of everyday life, we are going to lose so much that could tell us about a culture.

3.-Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, your way of life?.
I think they deduced that I married and had two sons and we live with our pet that is a dog and that we had a garden and that my family not eat junk food.
But I ate all kinds of food and I didn’t do much sport and I had an operation on my knee for a meniscus tear.

1- Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?

Yes I’m sure. The past is a collection of things, tools, places and activities developed for humans beings. The past is the life of this people itself, we can know through the different tracks they left in the sites they dwelled. On one hand write concerning the past is account for the shapes the organizations of people set up. On the other hand, the work involves to explain facts of wreck national or obnoxious social items.

I consider trying to understand the past is challenging owing to we can know the origin of our culture, we can realize how people live into its features and. Finally, archaeology permit us identify how many elements to the past are still between us.

2- Would you enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig? Why, or why not?

I can answer yes and no. It depends of several topics.
I think I can enjoy to assist on an archaeological, dig due to I can follow the practice development of an specific scientist method I ignore.
I think I can disagree to assist on it, because there are many techniques and procedures unknown by me, then, since an advanced moment I can became boring.

3- Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, and your way of life?

I first time they won’t deduce nothing about me, due to at the same place will be find many elements that belonged to people lived before and after me. The archaeologist should identify which objects have relations with every person or family who settled in the site. I’m sure will be many similarities between those objects and the life features of every stage.

The archaeologist can do. Yes, they can reach to discovered the element closer to me. Like a science, archaeology is able to permit their specialists to deduce and to perceive what I ate, my habits, my tastes even my feelings. The behaviors remain impregnated at the objects and can be reading.

About Jorge Brian Alarcón Flores says:

Jorge share us several interesting ideas. I pick up three or them that I feel most important, everyone belonging each answer.

The first is the interpretation archaeological work needs. The time run, the objects can vary their applications, like the activities change their purposes. After time, the same information means something different that in the past.

The second is the contribution to historical knowledge Archaeology made. Yes, a part of history is provided for Archaeology. Researches through other sources follow and accomplish rebuild history since differents approachs.

The last is the possibility archaeologist will have to infer detail about his daily life. These details can be objetives like occupation, activities and the layout of his house; and can be subjetives like interests and usages. The archaeologists have a mixed approach that made possible infer all these aspects.

1- Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?
Yes, I think it is a challenge to understand the past through archeology because it is hard work and requires a lot of patience. You have to have all the information to start telling the story backwards: from the end to the beginning as the video says. Unfortunately the black market does not allow this work to be done.
2- ¿Te gustaría ayudar en una excavación arqueológica? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
I wouldn’t like it because I’m impatient and I like to have immediate results.
3- Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, and your way of life?
I think they could deduce my customs, ways of eating, the use of technology and how interconnected the world was at that time.

1- Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?
The most challenging aspect is reconstructing something you cannot see, and for that, we must rely heavily on abductive thinking because we have to make assumptions based on facts we haven’t witnessed. Another challenging issue is that our current customs may influence what we believe happened in the past, which could slightly skew the reconstruction of archaeological events.

2- Would you enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig? Why, or why not?
I don’t think so. In the video, it shows that it’s a slow and somewhat boring process, and I believe it’s something that doesn’t align with my personality. I’m meticulous but very impatient, so I would rush things and perhaps make mistakes. Another reason is that I’m not a big fan of history, so I wouldn’t be interested in participating in an archaeological dig.

3- Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, and your way of life?
Archaeologists in the future could potentially uncover whether I was a sedentary individual, if I spent considerable time in bed, my dietary habits, whether I had pets or not, and even if I had children and how many.

    1. If it is a challenge, because we try to reconstruct the information we have piece by piece, it is like a puzzle, which brings us closer to the closest possible interpretation of the context of that time, how its culture developed, the main . characteristics or those that can be interpreted according to the information collected, but that does not mean that it is completely accurate.
Likewise, archeology has discovered information about unknown past cultures with the help of technology such as radiocarbon dating among others, which have revolutionized archaeology.

    2. Yes, it would be a magnificent experience, and with many learnings, in terms of research and data collection, therefore the acquisition of a better interpretation according to the data provided by the research, apart from the fact that it is purely field work, and it is extremely interesting.
Archeology has enriched the history of humanity like no other science. There is a large part of man’s unwritten past that archeology has managed to unravel, and why not be part of it.
Likewise, the study of the material remains of past life and activities is a noble endeavor that goes beyond discovering buried treasures, collecting information, and dating events.

    3. That, I am a person who belongs to the 21st century, according to my features they would identify the type of race, my age, my gender, my lifestyle according to the constructions of my house, the physical character of the urbanization in which I live, culture, social and environmental relations. In such a way that the evidence they obtain provides authenticity of the given object or otherwise they can also discredit historical or anthropological findings.

1- Do you think is challenging about trying to understand the past through archaeology? Why?

Reconstructing something we cannot directly observe presents one of the most daunting challenges in archaeology. This task often relies heavily on abductive thinking, where we must make assumptions based on available facts that we haven’t witnessed firsthand. Additionally, there’s the hurdle of our contemporary customs potentially influencing our interpretation of past events, which can subtly skew the reconstruction of archaeological narratives.

In the face of these challenges, archaeology resembles piecing together a puzzle. We methodically gather and analyze available information to gradually form a cohesive understanding of ancient civilizations. Through this process, we strive to unveil the main characteristics of these cultures and events, though we acknowledge the inherent limitations and uncertainties in our interpretations.

Fortunately, technological advancements, such as radiocarbon dating, have revolutionized archaeology. These tools enable us to uncover previously unknown aspects of ancient societies, enriching our understanding of the past and reshaping the field’s methodologies.

2- Would you enjoy assisting on an archaeological dig? Why, or why not?
Participating in excavating artifacts or uncovering historical sites can evoke a profound sense of exploration and connection with the past. It presents an opportunity to contribute to our comprehension of human history.
Engaging in fieldwork at an excavation site provides individuals with firsthand exposure to archaeological techniques. It offers a practical application of academic knowledge, fostering the acquisition of valuable skills in excavation methodologies, artifact preservation, and analysis.
Archaeological expeditions often occur in remote or exotic locales, offering participants the prospect of adventure and discovery. Working within diverse environments and cultures can be immensely gratifying, broadening one’s horizons.
Collaboration is central to archaeological endeavors, involving teamwork among researchers, volunteers, and local communities. Forming bonds with fellow participants and collaborating on problem-solving fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie.

3- Imagine if, 500 years from now, a team of archaeologists discovered your home. What might they deduce about you, your behavior, and your way of life?
rchaeologists may come across smartphones, tablets, laptops, and various electronic devices, showcasing the widespread adoption of digital technology for communication, entertainment, and productivity. These gadgets could offer insights into the prevalent apps, software, and online services of the era.

Evidence of smart home technology like thermostats, security cameras, and voice-controlled assistants such as Google Home might also be found. These findings would suggest an increasing inclination towards home automation, integrating technology into daily life for convenience and effectiveness.

Discoveries of streaming devices, subscriptions to platforms like Netflix, Hulu, or Spotify, and collections of digital media files would imply a shift from conventional television and music consumption towards on-demand, digital entertainment.

The presence of packages, receipts, and delivery boxes from online retailers like Amazon or eBay could indicate the prominence of e-commerce and the dependency on home deliveries for shopping necessities, particularly in response to global events impacting traditional retail experiences.
