Unit 7 – Health and Fitness

Health and fitness are two of the most important things in life. A healthy body and mind can help us live longer, happier, and more productive lives. There are many things we can do to improve our health and fitness, including eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep.
Eating a healthy diet means eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It also means limiting our intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats. Getting regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, building muscle, and improving cardiovascular health. Most adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Getting enough sleep is also important for overall health and well-being. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
Making healthy choices about our diet, exercise, and sleep can help us improve our health and fitness. By taking care of our bodies, we can live longer, happier, and more productive lives.

In my opinion the idea of being healthy and fit is similar worldwide due to easy access to online information. Since McLuhan’s Global Village concept, globalization has strengthened shared health perspectives. However, cultural factors like traditional diets and exercise habits still influence how people adopt a healthy lifestyle, creating some variations despite the overall uniformity in health awareness.

How would you encourage people in our country to lead a healthy lifestyle?

One way to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle is by highlighting the long-term benefits. For example, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help prevent diseases, which in turn saves money on medical expenses in the future. Raising awareness about these advantages through education and community programs can be effective. Additionally, promoting accessible fitness activities and healthy eating habits in schools and workplaces could help integrate these habits into daily life.

Yes, I think the idea of health and fitness is different from culture to culture but nowadays there is a global expectation about health and fitness. In general, there are bands of weight and height that are considered good, acceptable and bad to have an objective idea of health and fitness.

How would you encourage people in our country to lead a healthy lifestyle?
Well, I think that one of the main problems with leading a healthy lifestyle in our country is the portion size and the distribution of protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables, where the main proportion is for carbohydrates. Before industrialization, there was no problem with that because of the source of carbohydrates from natural whole grain, yams, quinua and corn, but nowadays they came from white food. So, I would encourage people to return to our original carbohydrates. It can be a struggle to do that because these types of carbohydrates have become very expensive.

    Good evening, everyone.
About the first question, I believe that the idea of health and fitness depends on each culture: while in Western standards, such as in Peruvian culture, thin people are considered healthy, in other cultures a healthy person is someone who, in our view, is obese, as is the case with women in Mauritania. Therefore, it is necessary to consider beliefs and cultural context when approaching these concepts.

Regarding the second question, I believe that the richness of our cuisine makes it difficult to maintain a completely healthy lifestyle. However, I would encourage people in our country to become aware of the importance of taking care of our physical and mental well-being. First, we must develop strong willpower to maintain a balanced and varied diet, such as eating adequate portions at each meal, drinking enough water, and avoiding sweets and processed foods. Second, exercising three times a week is important to maintain vitality. Finally, avoiding or managing stress is essential for good emotional health.

Thank you all for reading my thoughts.

    Greetings,
    Sheila Gendrau
