The boiling river of the Amazon
Andrés Ruzo – TEDGlobal 2014
When Andrés Ruzo was a young boy in Peru, his grandfather told him a story with an odd detail: There is a river, deep in the Amazon, which boils as if a fire burns below it. Twelve years later, after training as a geoscientist, he set out on a journey deep into the jungle of South America in search of this boiling river. At a time when everything seems mapped and measured, join Ruzo as he explores a river that forces us to question the line between known and unknown … and reminds us that there are great wonders yet to be discovered.

What do you know about the Amazon?
I know the Amazon is a very big river located in the Peruvian Amazon. I also know the Amazon is the largest river in the world and it’s the river that provides the sea with the most quantity of sweet water.

I’m afraid I have never visited the jungle, but I expect to go soon because I’am planning to travel to Tarapoto or Pucallpa next year.
How surprised were you by the information Andrés has presented?
It was amazing, because I would never have thought that a boiling river existed. Actually, I know thermal water but not a river like Andres presented. It is very amazing that the water is first hot and then cold and so on. Also it is amazing that the river water is hot for several kilometers and hot waterfalls exist even though they are very far from volcanic places.
I can indicate that the Amazon River is the longest and largest in the world, it unites different countries in South America such as Peru, Brazil; Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Suriname. At the moment I have not visited the jungle in Peru, I plan to go this year. Regarding the interesting video about the story, my attention was drawn to the city called El Dorado that had a lot of gold in the Amazon and the Incas mentioned it to the Spanish so that they would leave and not return on some occasions, I also did not know that there was a sector of the river Amazon with a thermal spring that makes the river hot and boiling, although there are no volcanoes near the area, it seems like a sacred place but also dangerous for people due to the high temperatures.
1.- What do you know about the Amazon?
The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, spanning across multiple South American countries, including Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and others. It is known for its vast biodiversity, housing millions of species of plants, animals, and insects. The Amazon River, the world’s second-longest river, plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate a due to its capacity to produce oxygen.
2.- Have you had the chance of visiting the jungle?
I had the opportunity to visiting the Amazon jungle, I describe as an awe-inspiring adventure. A lush vegetation, the incredible diversity of wildlife, and the unique experience of being immersed in such a remote and beautiful. Activities might include guided tours, boat rides, and interactions with indigenous communities.
3.- How surprised were you by the information Andrés has presented?
It is quite surprising and fascinating. The idea of a naturally occurring boiling river is extraordinary and challenges our understanding of natural phenomena. This discovery highlights the mysteries that still exist in our world and the potential for significant scientific exploration in even well-known regions like the Amazon.

1. I know that the Amazon is the lungs of the earth. Well, it has great vegetation and presents a great diversity of flora and fauna. This is great.
2. It is my dream to visit Iquitos, part of the Peruvian Amazon and sail on the Amazon River. At the moment I only know Pucallpa; I love its people, culture, food and climate, everything is beautiful.
3. I find the research done by Andrés interesting, what it shows us is incredible, the existence of that hot river, I am amazed at how powerful and surprising nature is. Furthermore, the passion he shows when he talks to us about the value and care that these spaces in the Amazon deserve is inspiring.
What do you know about the Amazon?
The Amazon river, one of the most important rivers in the world, brings water to almost all the countries in South America. The jungle is a completely different place to live: with natural and healthy food, weather, animals and unbelievable landscapes. On the other hand, the Peruvian government does not protect its natural energy sources. We have a lot of environmental issues due to the authorities do not anything.
Have you had the chance of visiting the jungle? Share your experience.
Yes, I had. Sincerely, I travel very often to the Peruvian jungle: I work in a third-party company that provides services to oil & gas companies; in this case, my clients extract gas from the earth, and the locations are in the middle of the Peruvian jungle.
How surprised were you by the information Andrés has presented?
I did not know about the boiling river. I already know that the Amazon river is very famous, but I do not know that it has this feature. The TED video was amazing, Andrés described the video scientifically, but it was clear to understand it. I liked it.
