Por una serie de casualidades, escuchando música de aquí y allá, descubrí que varias canciones no peruanas (algunas de origen bastante exótico, para un peruano) menciona al Perú, país en el que nací. Esto me alentó a hacer un pequenio recuento de canciones que mencionen al Perú en su letra. Espero que esta recopilación les sea de interés. Voy a ir aumentando el número de canciones poco a poco; si tienen alguna sugerencia de alguna canción, estaría feliz de recibir sus aportes.
En música “klezmer”
Hace un tiempo, escuchando una canción “klezmer” en inglés, me pareció escuchar que en la letra se mencionaba el nombre de “Perú”. La grabación que oí de esta canción proviene del CD del Festival de Weltmusik de Rudolstadt, Alemania, al que fui con mi hoy esposo Magnus. Desde la primera vez que la oí la adoré.
Como dice wikipedia, “el klezmer (del yiddish כלזמיר, etimológicamente del hebreo k’li zemer כלי זמר, “instrumento musical”) es la música de los judíos askenazíes de Europa Oriental. En el siglo XV, grupos seculares no litúrgicos desarrollaron este tipo de música y se les denominó klezmorim. Ellos se inspiraron en el antiguo testamento para crear melodías con temáticas de celebración y alegría.
El klezmer es fácilmente reconocible por sus características melodías expresivas, con reminiscencias de la voz humana, con la incorporación de risas, llantos y aullidos. El klezmer asume la propia tradición de la música jasídica y le incorpora sonidos, instrumentos y modos de interpretar de aquellos países en donde los judíos de la diáspora habitaban.”
Primero pensé que era un error…que tiene que ver el Perú con el klezmer , que es un tipo de música muy antigua? (aunque hay grupos que han modernizado el estilo, sobre todo en USA). Presa de una curiosidad muy grande, empecé a buscar por todos lados la letra, para confirmar mis sospechas… hasta que finalmente luego de algunos meses, un buen samaritano del internet me proporcionó la letra y con eso confirmé mi suposición.
La canción klezmer , del grupo “The Klezmatics” se llama “Man in a hat”, este nombre hace alusión a la ciudad de Manhattan, USA. Tiene un ritmo alucinante que mueve ne mi opinión hasta a las piedras. La canción menciona al Perú en la cuarta estrofa:

Música inglesa del siglo XIX
La canción “The coast of Perú” (La costa de Perú) la oía cuando hacía mi maestría en Inglaterra.
Esta canción fue grabada en 1956 por A.L. Lloyd para su album “The singing sailor”.
This song about the early 19th century Pacific whale fishing was recorded in 1956 by A.L. Lloyd for his, Ewan MacColl’s and Harry H. Corbett’s album The Singing Sailor. This track has been reissued lots of times, e.g. on their albums The Black Ball Line, Shanties and Fo’c’sle Songs (Wattle Records), Haul on the Bowlin’ (Stinson Records), as title track of the EP The Coast of Peru, and on the compilations Sea Songs and Shanties (Topic Sampler No 7), Chants de Marins IV: Ballads, Complaintes et Shanties des Matelots Anglais, and Sailors’ Songs & Sea Shanties.
A.L. Lloyd also sang this song on the Riverside LP Thar She Blows!, and recorded it for a third time in 1967 for the album Leviathan! Ballads and Songs of the Whaling Trade. Here, he was accompanied by Alf Edwards, English concertina; Dave Swarbrick, fiddle; and Martin Carthy, mandolin.
Lloyd commented in the The Coast of Peru sleeve notes:
The English whaling ship Emilia was the first to inaugurate the Pacific sperm whale fishery in 1788, rounding Cape Horn to fish in the waters of the South Sea islands and the coasts of Chile and Peru. By the 1840s, the days of the South Seamen were numbered, bur they left behind a fine memorial in their songs, of which The Coast of Peru is perhaps the most impressive. Tumbez, mentioned in the last verse, is in the far north of Peru, on the Gulf of Guayaquil, near the equator. Its girls are remembered in several whaling songs.

By no means all the oldtime whaling was done in northern waters. In the 1820s, for example, more than a hundred British ships, mostly out of Hull or London, where fishing in the spermwhale grounds round the Horn off the coast of Chile and Peru and taking the long, long run across the Pacific by way of Galapagos Island and the Marquesas, to Timor. The trip would last three years. The Coast of Peru is the most important ballad of the South-Seamen. Possibly it describes the chase of a southern right whale, not a sperm. Sperms were usually harpooned by running the boat close to the whale. Right whales, who tend to fight with their tail, were more often harpooned with the “long dart” from perhaps ten yards away. Mention of the mate in the “main chains” dates the song before the 1840s.

Fue también en Alemania que vi por primera vez la excelente película “Dancer in the dark” protagonizada por la muy talentosa Bjork. La película me dejó muy impactada, no solo por el contenido (el tema es la pena de muerte), sino por las actuaciones y por la música. Vi la película en Regensburg (Ratisbona, en espanol) , y luego días después que viaje a Hamburgo, lo primero que hice al llegar a esta ciudad es salir disparada a buscar el sound track de la película. Lo encontré y es uno de mis favoritos.

Esta canción también la oí en Alemania, creo que en Köln durante el carnaval de 2009. El grupo: “Autohändler”. La canción es obviamente para “fiestar”, como dice Magnus. EL título es “In Peru fliegt ‘ne Kuh” (‘En Perú vuela una vaca). Mejor no les traduzco la letra, pues es pura broma, pero menciona al Perú…
