El pensador alemán Jürgen Habermas recibió el 9 de mayo, día en el que además se cumplía los 64 años del fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el Premio Jaime Brunet 2008, creado para fomentar la política a favor de los derechos humanos.
El profesor Habermas cuenta con otros prestigiosos premios, entre los que cabe citar: el Príncipe de Asturias de Ciencias Sociales (2003), los premios Hegel (1974), Sigmund Freud (1976), Adorno (1980). Es Miembro de la Academia Alemana de la Lengua y “doctor honoris causa” por la universidades de Jerusalén, Buenos Aires, Hamburgo, Utrecht, Evanston, Atenas, Tel Aviv y de la New School for Social Research de New York.
El Jurado del Premio Jaime Brunet ha querido resaltar la figura de un filósofo que a lo largo de su trayectoria ha apostado, por una racionalidad comunicativa orientada hacia el entendimiento mutuo y la búsqueda del mejor argumento, como base legítima de la voluntad de los sujetos. Aboga para ello por un contexto democrático, como modelo de organización de la vida política, en el que los ciudadanos formados participan, debaten y dialogan sobre distintas alternativas. El Jurado quiere subrayar también el optimismo democrático de Habermas para quien la universalidad de las normas, aunque sea en potencia, es garantía formal para el cumplimiento de la justicia. Valoran especialmente su apuesta por un desarrollo simultáneo de la inteligencia moral junto con la inteligencia tecnológica e instrumental, que implica la formación de ciudadanos maduros y autónomos dispuestos a poner en entredicho sus convicciones más firmes y a aceptar el resultado de la discusión democrática.
En su discurso de aceptación del premio ha repasado que "los derechos humanos surgieron de la resistencia política contra la arbitrariedad, la represión y la humillación" y han ido incorporándose desde el siglo XVIII paulatinamente a todas las naciones e idiomas, y "desde entonces han sido violados pero también ratificados con mucha frecuencia".
En todo caso, ha dicho que la lucha por su instauración, continúa hoy en China, África, Bosnia o Kosovo "y también en nuestros propios países", de forma que "cada una de las repatriaciones de un solicitante de asilo al que se le cerró la entrada en un aeropuerto, cada uno de los barcos repletos de fugitivos de la pobreza que naufraga en la ruta entre Libia y la Isla de Lampedusa nos interpela a nosotros, los ciudadanos europeos".
Al respecto, ha puesto el acento en dos circunstancias que, en torno a los derechos humanos, se han revelado como características actuales, ya que mientras que en Europa se lucha por el reconocimiento de las minorías, la igualdad de condiciones laborales o de género, "la retórica de los derechos humanos ha ido desgastándose más" y "se han convertido en palabrería hueca que brota fácilmente de nuestras bocas".
Al respecto, Habermas ha planteado que los derechos humanos "constituyen aquella parte de la moral que no sólo hay que respetar en el trato personal sino que debe convertirse en realidad política, adoptando la robusta figura de los derechos fundamentales obligatorios".
En todo caso, ha reconocido que "el afianzamiento de los derechos humanos es problemático, pero no sólo en el ámbito internacional y en otras sociedades. Lo corrobora de inmediato el ejemplo del más que cuestionable trasiego sobre garantías de seguridad y las libertades civiles que, a raíz del terrorismo internacional, nuestros gobiernos imponen a su ciudadanía".

Además, durante la rueda de prensa Habermas dio su punto de vista sobre varios temas de actualidad como son el arribo de Barack Obama a la Casa Blanca y las posibles soluciones a la crisis financiera mundial.
Respecto al primer tema el pensador alemán se mostró positivo afirmando que el nuevo gobierno es "un regalo muy grande" para Estados Unidos de América después de ocho años de mandato de G.W Bush. También mencionó que el fenómeno Obama no podría concebirse en Europa, pues la cultura estadounidense tiene una "gran disponibilidad a emocionarse con las cosas"; mientras que en Europa, "con una historia complicada del siglo XX, con catástrofes y dictaduras, quizá es conveniente que aquí seamos menos entusiastas y estemos más en el suelo".
En cuanto a la crisis económica aseguró que ésta sólo podrá paliarse por la vía política, el interés que despierten la nuevas generaciones y el cambio de mentalidad que procura el éxito personal hacia el bienestar colectivo.
