Walter Benjamin: : El pensador vagabundo

De origen judío, tras la subida del nazismo al poder huyó a Francia, donde prosiguió su obra teórica. Ante el avance nazi sobre Francia, en 1940 huye con su hermana a Lourdes y consigue un visado para viajar a Estados Unidos, facilitado por Max Horkheimer.
Al atravesar la frontera franco-española, es detenido por la policía y pone fin a su vida. En el pequeño poblado catalán de Portbou se quitó la vida Walter Benjamin, un 26 de septiembre. El día anterior había realizado un penoso y agotador viaje desde Francia huyendo de los nazis, y al llegar a Portbou fue detenido por la policía franquista. El anuncio de su deportación al día siguiente fue el detonante de su trágica determinación . Benjamin está ya cansado de tanto horror y tanto sufrimiento. Ya no puede más y decide quitarse la vida ingiriendo una gran cantidad de morfina.
Las obras más conocidas de Benjamin fueron sus ensayos El autor como productor (1934), La obra de arte en la era de la reproducción mecánica (1936) y Iluminaciones. Son ensayos sobre temas estéticos y literarios desde un punto de vista marxista que ejercieron una gran influencia en su época y que son considerados clásicos.
