29/06: Development Gateway Award
The Development Gateway Foundation is calling for nominations from around the globe for the third annual Development Gateway Award. The award recognises outstanding achievement in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the lives of people in developing countries.
This year we are highlighting projects that empower or improve the conditions of youth. The nominated projects must leverage the power of ICT to create fresh opportunities and address development challenges such as health, education, employment or other areas important to social and economic development. Our goal is twofold: to advance understanding of the role of ICT in development by recognising leaders in the field, and to assist in the spread of excellent programs and ideas across the world.
There are about 1 billion young people, aged 15-24, in the world today and eighty-five percent of them live in developing countries. Young people play a central role in the information society as first adoptors of information and communication technologies. The $100,000 award will help the winning organization expand upon its success and mentor other prospective leaders in the field of ICT for development.
In addition to giving a significant cash prize to the award winner, the Development Gateway will highlight the stories of all the finalists on the Development Gateway Foundation website; their stories will also be available to the worldwide membership of our communities online networks.
The nomination form, rules and explanation of the award are available on from the website, and the winner will be announced towards the end of 2006.
