En 1936 los manuscritos inéditos de Newton fueron vendidos por la casa de subasta Sotheby´s de manera fragmentaria. Quien hizo denodados esfuerzos para volver a reunirlos y darles coherencia fue el economista inglés John Maynard Keynes, quien tenía especial fascinación por los siglos XVII y XVIII y en particular por la obra de Newton. Keynes dio a conocer que Isaac Newton se habia dedicado mucho más a la Alquimia que la totalidad de toda su obra científica. Con Keynes se empezó a replantear el conjunto de su obra y se empezó a investigar con mayor alcance la relación entre su ciencia mecanicista y la Alquimia, que es en el fondo una investigación sobre los vasos comunicantes entre lo racional y lo irracional. Estos estudios siguen hasta hoy.
En su ensayo "Newton, the man" Keynes resume sus propias investigaciones con su celebre frase «Newton no fue el primer representante de la Era de la Razón. Fue mas bien el último de los magos"
