FAMILY and pals of distraught pop star BRITNEY SPEARS last night feared she may kill herself after a judge took her children away.
In a hammer blow in the singer's custody battle, Judge Scott Gordon ordered druggie Britney, 25, to hand her two kids to her ex KEVIN FEDERLINE. To read the legal ruling click here.
Britney's mother LYNNE was yesterday desperately trying to contact her - to beg her not to do anything silly.
But party girl Brit looked happy when she was spotted shopping, tanning and then clubbing later that day.
Hours after the singer handed over her kids, she headed for her favourite tanning salon to top up her tan before leaving the Peninsula Hotel ready for a night on the town
She also obtained a Californian driving licence, which she was ordered to do weeks ago and was one of the reasons she lost custody.
County commissioner Gordon made the decision after the singer ignored all the orders he laid down for her.
She was told to meet a drug councillor, submit to drug testing, enrol in parenting classes, to sign judge's order and to drive her sons with a valid Californian drivers licence.
She did none of the above.
Britney's lawyer, Attorney Sorrell Trope said: "We weren't able to prove compliance with what the judge ordered.
"Specifically, the judge ordered that by 10am (Monday) morning, both parties show valid California driving licences. I've been unable to produce evidence of that.
"There was also a claim by Mr Federline's attorney that she had not complied with a previous order the court had made - before I came on board as lawyer - about having a random drug and alcohol test.
"There's no evidence that she actually failed a test."
Now her pals are are fearing the worst.
One friend said: "We are all fearing for Britney and this will be the final straw for her."
BRITNEY GOES OUT
A source close to Federline, 28, said: "Kevin believes Britney is endangering their sons. This is a huge victory for him, and a big shock for Britney.
"She never expected to lose her kids. Kevin's delighted. He feels they will be a lot safer with him."
After giving the boys to Kevin last night Britney, whose hits include Toxic, drove around LA erratically once more in defiance of a driving ban.
A source said: "Britney looked totally shocked and stunned. She kept driving round in circles and a few times she had near-misses.
"She looked lost, mentally and physically. Her mum has been calling her frantically. Lynne is terrified Britney will do something stupid."
Kevin was given "physical custody" of Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one. Britney is expected to challenge the ruling.
K-Fed had compiled a dossier of her alleged bad behaviour in a bid to win full custody of the two boys.

After their divorce last July, he was horrified when Britney began partying with Paris Hilton and repeatedly went out in no underwear.
In February this year she checked out of rehab and shaved off her hair.
A court ruled Britney was a "habitual" drug user and must submit to regular tests.
Bodyguard Tony Baretto said he saw her parade around her house naked.
The singer already faces up to six months' jail for a hit-and-run after allegedly ramming a parked car.
Britney's spokeswoman was not available last night.
