Blog 2:  Early Flight,  Past Exhibition – Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

Early Flight has closed as part of the Museum’s renovation. Learn more about the project to transform the National Air and Space Museum.

Details about the closed exhibition, as well as the original exhibition description, can be found below.

Celebrate the first decade of flight in the fictitious Smithsonian Aeronautical Exposition of 1913.

Early Flight celebrates the first decade of flight by evoking the atmosphere of an aviation exhibition from that period: the fictitious Smithsonian Aeronautical Exposition of 1913. The gaily decorated gallery is crammed with fabric-covered aerial vehicles, some fanciful, most real, along with trade show–style exhibits featuring cutting-edge technology of the day.

Gracing the gallery is a rare 1894 Lilienthal glider, along with Samuel P. Langley’s Aerodrome #5 and Quarter-Scale Aerodrome, powered, unmanned vehicles that successfully flew in 1896 and 1903. Early Flight also features the most original and complete of the Museum’s three Wright airplanes, the 1909 Wright Military Flyer, the world’s first military airplane. Other treasures include a Curtiss Model D “Headless Pusher,” an Ecker Flying Boat, and a Blériot XI monoplane. (…)

    1. I believe that this responds to their nature, because human beings resort to wanting more, even more when they find an ally such as technology to achieve that end, being curious and wanting always more is inherent to human nature.

    2. One of the most significant changes would be to abandon traditional transportation routes (highways, roads, etc.) and use the skies as a new transit route, however this also implies the creation of new risks, it is a “challenge”.

    3. Yes, currently there are many people who implement ecological transport mechanisms, one of them is the trend to create bicycles based on “banboo” and thus contribute to ecology, being these more ergonomic and less polluting.

Because it is one of the qualities that we don’t possess and that is one of the objectives of the human being, also to dominate the airs.
2.How do you think air travel will change in the future?
I think that if there is an adequate organization in the air, then one could travel in a more fluid way than just with airplanes.
    3. Are there any pioneers in other fields that you admire? Give your reasons.
In our country, one of the most recognized pioneers of the aeronautical revolution is Pedro Paulet and Jose Abelardo Quiñones, who became the national hero of Peru on May 10, 1966 because of their immolation in an air mission against the Ecuadorian batteries during the 1941 War.

I like the chesmistry but in history, it is mentioned that most of scientists faced some problems of health. Mary Curie for example, became the first in investigate radiactivity. Her death was consequence of exposition to radioactive elements that she used in different experiments.

I think flights will be more confortable because the airplanes will evolution and will be more modern.

I admire pioneers that scramble for equal and no discrimination.

Why do you think humans are so fascinated by the idea of flying?

The idea of flying is associated with the development of aviation.
    1. Air transport represents an advantage to move people and goods, mainly perishable, more easily and quickly, especially to inaccessible places, thereby contributing to their national development and international integration.
    2. A country with a powerful Air Force is in a more advantageous position to defend its national territory and the natural resources it has.

How do you think air travel will change in the future?

The current trend points to the expansion of low-cost long-haul flights, such as those of the Norwegian, Eurowings, Level and Joon airlines, pending the liberalization of airspace.

Are there pioneers in other fields that you admire?
Yes. I admire Jorge Chávez Dartnell, a French-Peruvian aviator, a pioneer of world aviation, who achieved the feat of crossing the Alps from Switzerland to Italy when he was only 23 years old !!! His biography is fascinating
