UNIT 11: THE MYSTERIES OF MEMORY

The more you know about your memory, the better you’ll understand how you can improve it. Your baby’s first cry…the taste of your grandmother’s molasses cookies…the scent of an ocean breeze. These are memories that make up the ongoing experience of your life — they provide you with a sense of self. They’re what make you feel comfortable with familiar people and surroundings, tie your past with your present, and provide a framework for the future. In a profound way, it is our collective set of memories — our “memory” as a whole — that makes us who we are. Most people talk about memory as if it were a thing they have, like bad eyes or a good head of hair. But your memory doesn’t exist in the way a part of your body exists — it’s not a “thing” you can touch. It’s a concept that refers to the process of remembering. In the past, many experts were fond of describing memory as a sort of tiny filing cabinet full of individual memory folders in which information is stored away. Others likened memory to aneural supercomputer wedged under the human scalp. But today, experts believe that memory is far more complex and elusive than that — and that it is located not in one particular place in the brain but is instead a brain-wide process. Let us embark in this intriguing topic. I cannot wait to read all your interesting opinion about it.

    How memory works
The memory works by allowing the person to remember facts or information that they have stored in their memory.

Do you have a good long-term memory?
No. I usually associate it with facts, people or use mnemonic strategies to remember.

What do you think about institutions that claim they can teach “memory improvement methods or techniques”?
I think that it can apply the techniques to improve the memory but it will depend on the user which are the techniques that are more related to their activities.

Any other contribution you may wish to add.
Finally, I believe that we can improve our memory by keeping it active, that is, by applying different simple techniques such as reading, solving numerical exercises, remembering riddles, phrases, jokes.

1.- Do you know of other superheroes or fictional characters that have changed over time? Give some, examples.
Yes, for example Superman, he now is more modern, more muscling and sophisticated. About Hulk I can say that he rise as human, a series that be transmit for TV in the 80s, then was create like caricature and finally as human. Spiderman rise lake caricature, now is or represent to a person common, Aqua man always was caricature, now be make lake human, and Supergirl this character rise lake caricature now is human, such I can name much heroes that changed over time.
2.- Do you prefer superheroes to be complex and serious like modern-day Batman, or more like simple cartoon characters? Why?
I prefer that to be as today, because is more exciting and I can enjoy it very better.

The memory is a mystery but we know it work actively in the cognitive process (those related knowledge of our environment).
The memory work selectly (temporarily retaining irrelevant information and hold up those useful information). These is called short-term and long-term memory.
Memories can be aware or unconsciously and is for that memory can be trained using some special techniques to increase its power. According to the evidence this is feasible.
Finally, some people say that the brain (including memory) is akin to a computer but I disagree. I think is much more than that. Still is a great mystery to discover.

He was the best student in this time, he worked a lot of time in his company and he didn’t have time to study, when I asked him at that time how he could memorize so quickly, he replied me that he had studied differents techniques to improve memory. That is why I believe that memory can be improved using memorization techniques
