Las olas de hasta 1,8 metros de altura llegaron a las costas 45 minutos después del terremoto, según la Armada de Chile. Un canal de televisión mostró imágenes de algunas zonas inundadas de Iquique, una ciudad de 180.000 habitantes en el extremo norte de Chile cerca de la frontera con Perú.
Cinco personas murieron, algunas de ellas aplastadas y otras por infartos en Iquique y en una localidad vecina. “Comunicamos el lamentable fallecimiento de cinco personas, cuatro hombres y una mujer”, dijo a periodistas el ministro del Interior, Rodrigo Peñailillo, que no detalló la causa de muerte de cada uno.
