The Oxford University 21st Century Challenge Competition is a new international entrepreneurship competition, jointly organized by the Oxford Science Enterprise Centre (OxSEC) and the James Martin Institute for Science and Civilisation (JMI) at the Said Business School, Oxford.

This new competition is open to entrepreneurs world wide, and is looking to encourage innovative new business ideas - from new products and services to innovative operational processes and business models that can help to solve some of the major social, environmental and health challenges of the 21st century.

This year the competition has a total prize fund of £65,000, with £35,000 for the overall winner and three runners-up prizes of £10,000.

We launched a global competition for the design and delivery of innovative, high quality, and non-fossil fuel-based lighting products targeting low- income consumers in Sub-Saharan Africa. 10 to 20 winners will receive grants of up to $200,000 USD. The X PRIZE Foundation and Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the Google Lunar X PRIZE, a robotic race to the Moon to win a remarkable $30 million prize purse. Private companies from around the world will compete to land a privately funded robotic rover on the Moon that is capable of completing several mission objectives, including roaming the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending video, images and data back to the Earth.

The AMD Open Architecture Challenge is an open, international design competition. Its aim is to develop not one but many solutions for building sustainable, multi-purpose, low-cost technology facilities for those who need them most. Three community partners have been selected to participate in this year's Challenge. Each site poses a unique set of design constraints and opportunities. While the needs of each client are unique, the hurdles they face in embracing technology to offer access to education, healthcare and the global marketplace are shared by millions of people in communities all over the world.

You do not have to be trained architect to participate. Anyone can enter. Entrants are invited to develop a design for one, two or all three sites.

The contributions of immigrants to U.S. technology formation are staggering. While the foreign-born account for just over 10 percent of the U.S. working population, they represent 25 percent of the U.S. science and engineering workforce and nearly 50 percent of those with doctorates. Even looking within the Ph.D. level, ethnic researchers make an exceptional contribution to science as measured by Nobel Prizes, election to the National Academy of Sciences, patent citation counts, and so on. The magnitude of these ethnic contributions raises many research and policy questions: 4 examples are debates regarding the appropriate quota for H1-B temporary visas, the possible crowding out of native students from the science and engineering fields, the brain-drain or brain-circulation effect on sending countries, and the future prospects for U.S. technology leadership. This paper describes a new approach for quantifying the ethnic composition of U.S. inventors with previously unavailable detail.

El objetivo de la presente postulación es seleccionar a individuos, grupos de personas
y/o microempresas para que participen en el “1er. Programa de Fortalecimiento y
Acompañamiento a Creadores de Tecnología para el Desarrollo”, en el cual se trabajará
estrechamente con ellos para que desarrollen sus propuestas de producto tecnológico,
desde la realización del prototipo industrial y la elaboración del plan de negocios, hasta
la comercialización del producto tecnológico con la estrategia y/o actividad empresarial
más apropiada.

El “1er. Programa de Fortalecimiento y Acompañamiento a Creadores de Tecnología
para el Desarrollo”, mediante el cual RAMP PERÚ brindará el apoyo profesional y
económico necesario para que los participantes logren sus objetivos de invención e
innovación, durará entre 21 y 33 meses y se dividirá en dos fases: (1) Fase de
Formación, entre 9 y 12 meses, y (2) Fase de Acompañamiento, entre 12 y 21 meses,
según los casos que se presenten.

IBLF and the International Finance Corporation, in close collaboration with the UN Global Compact, have produced a comprehensive toolkit that business managers can use to identify, assess and implement responses to human rights challenges in new or evolving business projects.

This tool is designed to help companies understand in a proactive rather then reactive way where potential human rights challenges may lie in their evolving or future business projects, so that they can manage these risks and mitigate or eliminate them before they become a problem.

The Guide released today is a work in progress and is to be tested over the next two years to ensure that it is as practical and user-friendly as possible.

The Guide introduces an eight step process through which business managers and their colleagues can oversee the identification, assessment and implementation of measures that will strengthen their company's contribution to human rights protection:

Step One: Determine whether a full human rights impact assessment is needed

Step Two: Identify and clarify the business project context

Step Three: Set the baseline: articulate the local picture and conditions

Step Four: Consult with Stakeholders to verify the human rights challenges

Step Five: Assess the human rights impacts and consequences

Step Six: Present the assessment findings and recommendations to management

Step Seven: Implement a human rights management process

Step Eight: Monitor, Evaluate and Report on the Management Process

The Buckminster Fuller Challenge seeks submissions of design science solutions within a broad range of human endeavor that exemplify the trimtab principle. Trimtabs demonstrate how small amounts of energy and resources precisely applied at the right time and place can produce maximum advantageous change.

Each year a distinguished jury will award a single $100,000 prize to support the development and implementation of a solution that has significant potential to solve humanity's most pressing problems in the shortest possible time while enhancing the Earth's ecological integrity.

El Congreso aprobó el Convenio Nº 176 de la OIT, sobre la seguridad y salud en las minas, mediante la Resolución Legislativa Nº 29012. Con ello, el Estado peruano garantizará el cumplimiento de disposiciones mínimas sobre la materia, sin perjuicio de que, mediante legislación interna, se otorguen mayores niveles de protección.

Entre las disposiciones contenidas en el convenio figuran:
Medidas dirigidas a garantizar la aplicación del convenio. El Estado debe adoptar lo siguiente:

- Formular, aplicar y revisar periódicamente una política nacional coherente en materia de seguridad y salud en las minas.

- Emitir normas técnicas, directrices o repertorios de recomendaciones prácticas sobre actividad minera.

- Designar a la autoridad competente que se hará cargo de vigilar y regular los diversos aspectos de la seguridad y salud en las minas.

- Vigilar la seguridad y salud en las minas, con inspecciones laborales.

- Regular los procedimientos de investigación de los accidentes mortales o graves, los incidentes peligrosos y los desastres en las minas.

- Suspender o restringir la actividad minera, por seguridad y salud.

- Fijar procedimientos que garanticen el ejercicio de los derechos de los trabajadores y sus organizaciones en la actividad minera.

- Establecer exigencias en materia de salvamento, primeros auxilios y servicios médicos en las minas.

- Instaurar medidas de seguridad en las minas abandonadas y fijar reglas sobre el transporte y la eliminación de sustancias peligrosas.

Obligaciones de los empleadores. Entre están las siguientes:

- Eliminar, controlar o reducir al mínimo, según corresponda, los riesgos inherentes a la actividad minera.

- Asegurarse de que la mina se diseña, construye y se dota de equipos eléctricos, mecánicos y de otra índole, incluido un sistema de comunicación, que garanticen la seguridad.

- Adoptar medidas para mantener la estabilidad del terreno de las áreas de trabajo o de acceso a ellas.

- Establecer, como mínimo, dos vías de salida de las zonas de trabajo.

- Asegurar un sistema de ventilación adecuado; y adoptar medidas de prevención y de acción contra siniestros y desastres naturales.

- Proporcionar y mantener, sin ningún costo para los trabajadores, el equipo, la ropa y demás accesorios necesarios para la protección contra los riesgos de la actividad.

- Proporcionar a los trabajadores con lesión o enfermedad los primeros auxilios correspondientes, así como un medio adecuado de transporte para su traslado a los servicios médicos correspondientes.

- Otorgarles a los trabajadores, sin ningún costo, el acceso a diversos programas de formación y de readaptación, y de instrucciones sobre seguridad y salud en el trabajo.

- Investigar todos los accidentes e incidentes peligrosos, y presentar ante la autoridad el resultado de dichas indagaciones; realizar de manera sistemática la vigilancia de la salud en los trabajadores.
